At Bel Aire School, one very important part of our curriculum includes the teaching of character traits in order to strengthen our students' self-esteem, personal responsibility and decision making skills, and to develop the moral convictions to withstand undesirable peer pressure.

Character Development Education is not new. Teaching of right behavior and conduct in life started with our founding fathers who recognized that the preservation of freedom in a democratic society depended upon the perpetuation of certain basic principles.

In recent years, public concern about today's children has begun to merge into a call for renewed attention and response to the building of character and ethical behavior in the schoolchildren of this nation. This sentiment was strongly voiced by all members, parents, administrators, teachers, students, and community and school board representatives, who served on the Reed Union School District's Strategic Planning Committee.

In support of this, the District has placed a high priority on implementing a Character Development Education curriculum (grades K-8) so that every child receives daily instruction and practice in building strong, responsible character. This curriculum, developed by a committee of administrators and mentor teachers, includes lessons built around the six pillars.
